CHESTER — When forward Joseph Baskerville left in the early minutes of the game, Hector Borgos knew he had to step up.
Borgos, a 6-foot-3 sophomore forward, scored a season-high 20 points & 11 rebounds for the Raiders in a 66-53 win over Division IV foe Chester.
O’Neill head coach Debra Crowe’s nickname for Borgos is ‘beast’ — and he played like one tonight.
“Tonight was definitely my best game of the season,” said Borgos. “When our other big-man (Baskerville) got hurt, I knew I had to come out and do a little bit more in the paint tonight.”
“Hector was a huge contribution tonight,” said Crowe. “He had some great finishes in the paint and pulled down some great rebounds for us.”
Junior forward Josh Borowicz was Baskerville’s replacement. He only scored four points, but was a difference-maker defensively.
“Josh had some really valuable minutes tonight and set the tone defensively,” added Crowe. “He took two fearless charges in the second half that got everyone really fired up.”
O’Neill (5-2) trailed throughout the entire first quarter, and held onto a 28-27 lead at halftime. The Raiders went on a 12-0 run to start the third quarter and never looked back.
Junior guard Darius Boben was pivotal in their third quarter surge, scoring 16-of-his-22 points in the second half.
“I just tried to go out there and play my game,” said Boben. “The team played solid on offense and defense. We forced them into making some bad passes and made some shots that silenced their crowd.”
Crowe added that tonight was the first time ‘in awhile’ that O’Neill beat Chester (1-4), and was pleased to finally beat them.
“Chester has always had a very good team, and this years team is no different. It’s been awhile since we’ve beaten them, and that’s why the boys were so happy in the locker room.”
O’Neill could be heard cheering in the boys locker room for a little over two minutes following the win.
“They (Chester) are a very solid team,” said Borgos. We know we’ll see them again later on in the season, and maybe in the playoffs. But we won’t back down against anyone, and we’re determined to win the (Class B) Championship this year.
